Liberals continue to normalize socialist ideas
Are stimulus cheques in "good times" the new norm?
Yesterday’s announcement by the Liberal government that they are going to send $250 cheques to every Canadian was not unprecedented. Governments have done this many times during supposed periods of “crisis” like a recession or unjustified lockdowns.
But yesterday’s announcement along with the announcement by the Ford government* in October to give Ontarians $200 each, are being done during the supposed “good times”.
*Conservative in name but indistinguishable from the federal Liberals.
The Deputy Prime Minister, Chrystia Freeland said yesterday that lower inflation and interest rate cuts have “created the space for us to provide a little more relief for hard-working Canadians.”
The crazy part of this announcement was the rationale. The Canadian federal government currently has a debt of over $1.2 trillion or $30,000 per man, women and child. The government is far from even having a balanced budget while borrowing roughly $100M each and every day to operate.
Yesterday’s $250 payment to taxpayers using their own borrowed money is going to cost $4 billion. All of it borrowed and adding to the debt. The government does not have money to give people a cheque. But it can borrow indefinitely on our behalf and our children’s behalf and redistribute wealth as they please.*
*They will probably even borrow money to advertise that they are borrowing money to give us a $250 cheque…This isn’t a joke.
What bothered me most about the recent announcements is the normalizing of it all. Most people are acting like sending stimulus cheques is now just normal politics that can occur multiple times a year. In good times and bad.
When Pierre Poilievre said he didn’t think it was a good idea to borrow money on Canadians’ behalf to give them an insignificant sum like $250, the Liberals made this statement:
They obviously believe that this attack will resonate with their voters. So my conclusion is that Liberal voters/supporters just want a government that “is focused on them”. A government that just gives them periodic cheques for being a good citizen.
Maxime Bernier said it correctly. This is just a gimmick.
If we keep normalizing these handouts from government even in good times, we are slipping closer and closer to a socialist or communist society.

Glad we didn't fund any of this incompetence. Glad we won't be required to pay it all back as always with the interest they will attach. Sometimes when people fix the way they commit to the mismanagement of civil servants they find the justification not to worry turning your back on it. Good luck as your going to need more soon.
Oldest political trick in the book. Will Canadians fall for it?
